Our Story

Welcome to ilovemud.store, the online home of Vijay Stoneware Pottery. Everything you see here begins the same way it has for over three decades: with a lump of raw clay, a spinning wheel, a pair of practised hands, and the heat of the kiln.

It started in 1992, in our village Sanjeevani Hagar, Pondicherry, in a converted family cowshed with a single wood-fired kiln. What began as one potter's quiet devotion to clay slowly grew — firing by firing — into a working pottery whose pieces now sit in homes across India and travel to tables in Europe, the USA, Canada and several countries in the world.

At the heart of it all is P. Vijaya Kumar, who has spent forty-six years at the potter's wheel. Across more than 6,500 firings — from wood, to oil, to gas — he has learned the clay the only way a potter truly can: by making, breaking, and making again. That lifetime of practice lives on in every mug, bowl, and vase we send out.

Our Craft

We make Authentic Stoneware Pottery — not decorative pottery that hides in a cabinet, but sturdy, everyday ware made to be lived with.

Our Craft

We make Authentic Stoneware Pottery — not decorative pottery that hides in a cabinet, but sturdy, everyday ware made to be lived with. Each piece is wheel-thrown by hand by the rural craftsmen from the surrounding eight villages then high-fired to 1315 °C in our own downdraft gas kiln. That intense heat vitrifies the clay, making it dense, hard-wearing, and beautifully durable.

Because every piece is shaped and glazed by hand, no two are ever exactly alike. Small variations in colour, tone, and form aren't flaws — they're the fingerprints of a handmade object, and the reason a piece of ours feels different in the hand.

Our Four Signature Glazes

We mix our glazes in-house, drawing on classic Japanese traditions:

Celadon — a soft, calming sea-green

Tenmoku — a deep, glossy near-black

Ash — a warm, earthen brown

Matte — a quiet, stone-like cream

Blue and two-tone finishes are available across much of our range as well.

What We Make

From the kitchen to the table to the whole of the home:

Tableware — plates, bowls, mugs, cups & saucers

Kitchen & serveware — jugs, teapots, casseroles, canisters, serving dishes

Home & décor — vases, planters, lamps, diffusers, and more

We also welcome custom and wholesale orders — bespoke shapes, sizes, and glazes for homes, cafés, and hotels.

Our stoneware is made to be used, and to last

Hand-thrown and high-fired for real strength

Food-safe, and certified free from hazardous chemicals

Dishwasher- and microwave-safe.

Scratch-resistant and hard-wearing, day in and day out

Beyond the Wheel

Our love of clay doesn't stop at the studio. "Born of Earth and Fire," P. Vijaya Kumar's memoir and complete guide to the craft of stoneware, tells the story of a life at the wheel and shares the knowledge behind it. And through our hands-on course, ”Thirty Days in Clay," we pass that craft on to a new generation of makers.

Come Say Hello

Whether you're furnishing a table, searching for a gift with soul, or simply drawn to the honest beauty of handmade things, we'd love to welcome you.
